A six time Grammy nominee, vocalist Mark Murphy has enjoyed a prolific 40 year recording career.  His original lyrics to 'Stolen Moments' and 'Red Clay' and more are known the world over.  His innovative projects range from the work of Nat 'King' Cole to Jack Kerouac to Ivan Lins to Eddie Jefferson.  "Mark has devoted a long career to singing the hippest music with the best musicians." states Leonard Feather. "Consider the company he has kept on records.  In the '60s, Clark Terry, Dick Hyman, Roger Kellaway.  In the '70s, David Sanborn and the Brecker Brothers.  In the '80s, Frank Morgan, Richie Cole and the Azymuth Trio.  Consider the jazzmen to whose instrumental works he has composed and sung lyrics: Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Pat Metheny, Charlie Parker, McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter."

These two nights will be no different, with two sets from Mark each night, backed by Larry Berrileau on percussion and Seattle's own New Stories Trio.

(New Stories Trio)  Since their inception in 1988, Seattle-based New Stories has divided it's time between performing as a trio and as the backup group to some of the greatest names in jazz. They have three critically acclaimed CDs of their own, five with be-bop saxophone great Don Lanphere, and a Grammy nominated effort for RCA with singer Mark Murphy. Their latest recording, Don Lanphere & New Stories, "Home At Last" was selected as one of the top 5 CDs of 2001 by Ira Gitler in JazzTimes magazine. The trio has been a house group for 14 years at Bud Shank's Pt. Townsend Jazz Festival, performed at the JVC Jazz Festival in Vladivostok, Russia, appeared in concert with Tom Harrell, Nick Brignola, Jane Monheit, Conte Condoli, Bobby Shew, Jon Faddis, & Larry Coryell, and regularly do concerts and clinics at colleges & clubs around the country by themselves or in appearances with Don Lanphere, Mark Murphy or Ernie Watts. Their music has been included on an internationally released compilation CD for Universal Music entitled: "Repertoire: A Starbuck's Collection of Unforgettable Piano Jazz," and is included as a Windows Media sample in the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System. Recently, New Stories recorded 4 projects for producer Don Sickler at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in New Jersey. Scheduled for release in 2003, they include: an album of music by Elmo Hope with special guest Bobby Porcelli; a collection of 10 New Stories' original compositions; a CD for New York trombonist Scott Whitfield, and a music-minus-one CD for Hal Leonard Publications.

(Flowmotion) Seattle based band, FlowMotion combines a unique mix of Funk, Rock, Jazz, Reggae and Bluegrass to weave a complex tapestry of sound. The music is funky and danceable with a message of tribal philosophy and celebration.  FlowMotion formed in Oct. 1999 and currently average 125 shows per year, drawing capacity crowds at some of Seattle's hottest venues. In their music, rock, funk, reggae, bluegrass and traditional African & Latin influences converge to create a sound that keeps FlowMotion's audience moving from start to finish. Add in the band's trademark tribal drumming, scorching guitar wizardry and stratospheric jamming, and the result is one of the most gratifying, uplifting and inspiring live music experiences around. The variety of musical styles and transitions gives FlowMotion a truly magical experience on the dance floor. Each show produces songs that never sound exactly as they did before. While at a FlowMotion show, expect to experience something of a spiritual awakening and an elevated state of mind. Is it church? For some it definitely is.

(JOWB)  Jam on White Bread magnetizes venues with an engaging, highly danceable musical force.  Combining decades of genre influences with a signature personality all of their own, these six musicians demonstrate the powerful capabilities of the live music experience - music created in the moment, for the moment. Exploring a wide range of musical influences, the band's constantly evolving sound flows through a landscape of inventive, soulful tunes. They project a boldly progressive style, yet stay true to the roots of soul, R&B, blues, funk, pop and the multi-faceted qualities of rock. Jam on White Bread is building a rapidly-expanding audience, thanks in large part to their uncanny ability to offer an entirely original experience every time they take the stage.  Every show features new interpretations of originals and covers alike, a contributing factor to the growing core audience that eagerly tracks their musical explorations. To preserve the events, live recording enthusiasts regularly record the shows, then share the music with other enthusiasts across the country.

Born in 1951, Bob Berg began his musical experience at the age of six, studying classical piano at his home in Brooklyn N.Y. He began playing saxophone at the age of 13, and soon thereafter attended the High School of the Performing Arts. In 1968, Berg was admitted to The Juilliard School, studying classical saxophone. While attending Juilliard, Berg was offered a tour with the organist Jack McDuff, which began his career as a jazz musician.

In 1973, Berg joined Horace Silver's band and remained there for three years, appearing on three of Silver's albums. It was in this period that Bob also became active on the New York jazz scene meeting other young musicians and playing and exchanging ideas with many of his peers. It also gave him the opportunity to work with some of the great bands working around the city.

In 1976, he replaced George Coleman in Cedar Walton's classic quartet, Eastern Rebellion. Berg remained with Walton for five years, playing alongside the legendary rhythm section of bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins. With this band, Berg toured the world extensively and recorded many albums.

In 1984, Berg joined the Miles Davis band. His association with Miles lasted three years and consisted of many world tours and several recordings. After leaving Davis, Berg embarked on a solo recording career and a well-known collaboration with guitarist Mike Stern. Bob and Mike produced many recordings together and toured extensively.

In 1992, Berg began his work with Chick Corea's acoustic Quartet. Again, he has toured the world several times with this great band, also recording two CD's with the band.  In the nineties Berg was invited to act as a cultural ambassador by the US Department of State. The "Bob Berg Quartet" toured the Caribbean Rim in 1992, and a large portion of the former Soviet Union in1994. The band met with much success in these regions.

At the current time, Berg is touring with his own Quartet and other special projects. Bob is also involved with a new reincarnation of Steps Ahead featuring Mike Manieri, Peter Erskine, Eliane Elias and Marc Johnson.

Berg has played and recorded with many other great musicians, too numerous to mention. He has recorded ten albums as a leader, which have reflected his rather wide scope of interests in improvisational-based music. In 1993, Berg's recording "Back Roads" was nominated for a Grammy Award for "best contemporary jazz performance."

The critically acclaimed CD titled "Another Standard", is Bob's latest solo album. "The Jazz Times Superband", featuring Randy Brecker, Joey Defrancesco and Dennis Chambers, was also well received by the press and fans alike.

Bob's newest project is the cooperative effort, "Four Walls of Freedom", with vibraphonist Joe Locke, drummer Gary Novak and bassist James Genus, just recorded for the Sirocco record label. The adventurous

Though she always wanted to be a singer, Chilean jazz vocalist Claudia Acuna didn't discover jazz music until she was 15. Instead the Santiago native grew up singing traditional folk songs and current pop hits, but once some of the city's jazz fans heard her perform, they told her she had a natural gift for the style. Acuna frequented Santiago's major jazz club as a performer as well as an audience member, sitting in on sets with local musicians and meeting luminaries like Wynton Marsalis, Michel Petrucciani and Danilo Perez.

In 1995, Acuna moved to New York to pursue her career more seriously. Taking odd jobs and sitting in on as many jam sessions as possible — sometimes waiting till the early morning hours for her chance to sing — she gradually made a name for herself in the jazz community, eventually performing regular dates at Smalls, Sweet Basil, the Zinc Bar and Metronome. Through this consistent gigging she met bassist Avishai Cohen, with whom she collaborated on a demo tape that earned Acuna a contract with Verve Records. Cohen also worked with her on her debut album The Wind From The South, which Verve released in spring 2000. — Heather Phares (AMG)

Two of the Northwest’s funkiest bands come together About The Music!

Rubberneck:
RUBBERNECK Sets New Funk Standard With Release Of “EGO><MANIC”
Join
Portland’s favorite Latin funk group as they celebrate the November 26th release of their highly anticipated new studio album, EGO><MANIC. With signed CD’s and giveaways just for coming through the door, the night no doubt promises to be a magical one. Don’t miss an evening of Northwest funk’s past, present, and future- Rubberneck, Friday, December 6th @ About The Music.

Nearly four years after the release of their nationally acclaimed album, El Nino, Rubberneck is once again rewriting the boundaries of funk, soul, and Latin music with their own timeless fusion. Intelligent, hook-laden, and funky as ever, EGO><MANIC soulfully leads the listener through the highs of the party and the lows of bottomed out relationships while maintaining a groove that is as addicting as it is undeniable.

EGO><MANIC was recorded and mixed at Falcon Studios in Portland, Oregon and incorporates enduring attributes of music by James Brown, Tower of Power, Santana, and Curtis Mayfield, while maintaining a distinctly modern feel. Inspired by artists like India Arie, D’Angelo, Angie Stone, and Jill Scott, Rubberneck’s frontman/songwriter, Ricardo Ojeda remarks, “I think if you listen to the new soul and funk out there right now, you’ll find our muse. We just like to come at it with an old-school approach.”

That “old school approach” is part of what makes EGO><MANIC so special.  Rubberneck avoids employing samples or programmed beats and recorded many of the songs live in order to capture the energy that makes their club performances so convincing.  As a result, the album transmits a sense of classic authenticity and that heavy, urban feel DJs are recreating in the studio.

The thick groove is provided courtesy of nationally-renown drummer Bruce Carter (Cameo, Kenny G, Pleasure) and Pablo Ojeda (bass), while several tasty solos are added by saxmen Tim Bryson (Linda Hornbuckle) and Josh Cliburn (Porterhouse). Ricardo’s soulful vocal rasp relays a sense of intense passion with each passing lyric, while mega-tight horn lines arranged by saxophonist John Morrow and recently acquired trumpeter James Gregg nimbly jump from Motown to Salsa to New York funk. Combine this with a strong songwriter sensibility, irresistible hooks, and EGO><MANIC has the makings of a new funk classic.

Otis P and the Jivefunk:
From the ashes of disaster and collapse rises a new band that doesn't need the Studio Magic knob to sound good. Yet again the Great Northwest issues forth another brand of musician to take music to the next level. Drawing from the influences of past Phenoms and Legends of the musical world, Otis P & the JiveFunk already have a sound far more classic than its years.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bobby began playing the guitar at the age of eight and switched to the trumpet at ten. By the time he was thirteen he was playing at local dances with a number of bands and by fifteen had put together his own group to play at dances, occasional concerts and in jazz coffee houses. He spent most of his high school days playing as many as six nights a week in a dinner club, giving him an early start to his professional career.

He then spent three years as the jazz trumpet soloist in the famed NORAD multi-service band. Shortly after leaving he joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Sam Donahue, which, among other things, gave him the chance to perform quite a bit with trumpet legend Charlie Shavers. After his stint with Tommy Dorsey, Bobby was asked to play with Woody Herman's band upon Bill Chase's recommendation. He then spent some time playing for Della Reese and Buddy Rich, who's big band had just been formed.  Many other similar situations followed and Bobby played lead trumpet for a number of pop stars. This brought Bobby to live in Las Vegas where he became prominent in various hotels and casinos.  By this time Bobby was widely known for his strong lead playing rather than as a jazz soloist. So late in 1972 he decided to make a move to the Los Angeles area in order to get reinvolved in developing as a jazz player.

Once in Los Angeles, Bobby quickly found what he was looking for, and in the years to come he spent time with the groups of Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Horace Silver Quintet, and Frank Strazzer-Sam Moss, as well as numerous big bands such as Bill Holman, Louie Bellson, Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin, Oliver Nelson, Bill Berry, Nat Pierce-Frank Capp Juggernaut, Ed Shaughnessy, Terry Gibbs, Benny Goodman, Maynard Ferguson, Neal Hefti, Don Menza, and Bob Florence.

In addition to being a sideman Bobby also became a leader around this time, recording many of his own albums. Several of these received very high accolades from critics and high placement on the airplay charts. One of his albums, 'Outstanding In His Field' was nominated for a Grammy in 1980, while, 'Heavy Company' was awarded the Jazz Album Of The Year in 1983.

During this time Bobby also found a great deal of studio work, including TV shows like 'Hawaii 5-O', 'Streets Of San Francisco', 'Bob Newhart', 'Mary Tyler Moore', 'Midnight Specials', 'Don Kirschner Rock Concert', 'Happy Days', 'Laverne And Shirley', and 'Eight Is Enough.' His work on soundtracks includes 'Grease I and II', 'Rocky I and II', 'Six-Pack', 'The Muppet Movie', 'The Drivers', and 'Taxi'.

Today, in addition to a busy performing and private teaching schedule, Bobby spends a considerable amount of time actively involved in the educational system, conducting clinics and master classes at high schools and college campuses all over the world. Bobby has also been active on the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild, and has acted as National Trumpet Chairman for the International Association of Jazz Educator's for 16 years. He authors numerous articles of educational interest in various trade magazines, all translated into several languages for worldwide distribution and is currently writing a trumpet tutor for CD-ROM. During a period of traveling to New Zealand, Bobby acted as host for a weekly TV show entitled 'Just Jazz' and has been in numerous artist-in-residence situations virtually all over the world. He has even had a few minor acting roles in movies and TV shows.

He continues to tour internationally and to produce and record excellent music. He has released several recent albums for the MAMA Foundation including Playing With Fire (w/Tom Harrell), Heavyweights (w/Carl Fontana), and Salsa Caliente.

Bobby Shew never stops using his remarkable insight, sensitivity and creativity to inspire the next generation of jazz players and teachers.

Stinkhorn
Jim Knodle and Anansi

Stinkhorn "tunguska" cd review

by Peter Monaghan, Earshot Jazz, January, 2002

The new album by the Seattle-based quartet Stinkhorn will surprise even those familiar with the quartet’s excellent output and live shows of the past few years.

Here is an album that can take its place among an elite of Northwest recording: It’s strikingly evolved, cannily paced and arranged for flow, and has an impressive balance of musical abandon and restraint. For likenesses, influences, or inflections in this music, one thinks of bands like Last Exit, where sweetly howling guitarist Sonny Sharrock and unleashed hornman Peter Brotzman rode (often off the rails) the rocksolid foundation of Ronald Shannon Jackson and Bill Laswell. But there’s a different tone and bearing in much of Stinkhorn’s music, which is at once confident and highly accomplished but winningly modest in its claims.

In Heaney one hears Sharrock, also some highspeed john Mclaughlin and slashing James Blood Ulmer, but individualists of raunchy, trippy rock and funk, too --- Funkadelic’s Eddie Hazel, for instance. But that’s just where Heaney starts on a personal sound that is varied and surprising, as when he turns on one cut to a delicate, koto-like passage.

On tenor and soprano sax, Michael Monhart displays a superbly individual voice. It recalls, at times, Jimmy Guiffre --- at others Pharoah Sanders, for his yearning.

And, as John Whitton remarked in these pages in 1997, reviewing Stinkhorn’s earlier, self-titled album, Monhart also possesses something reminiscent of Arkestra stalwart, the late John Gilmore --- It’s something in their shared harsh beauty.

Drummer Howard Ouchi thunders and hushes as appropriate. Bassist John Morris rumbles along, re-stating and re-shaping the melodies.

All four Stinkhornist can easily out shred Nixon when the moment is right. But the album starts with a quiet, coaxed emergence – distorted guitar and restrained, primal screeches wrenched from the saxophone – before suddenly switching to a melody as friendly as a romping Saint Bernard. Ouchi on drums drives the tune with a this-is-for-real, heavyfisted command, a la Buddy Miles, supported by Morris’s plain but lyrical bass. Then quickly the opening piece, a coda for the album, is done.

In its choruses, the next track, “Sonny’s Delight,” signals the album’s predominant friendliness, and from the solo passages one gains a sense of the projects contrasting questing and earthbound modesty. The horns are slightly flattened. They have vibrato virtually never – only when indicated rather than as a saxophone convention. They tend to the shrillness of a shawm wending in exploration.

A few cuts in, one registers that these pieces have heads and kind-of-solos that tie them to the jazz tradition, but there is also an emphasis on unison playing and solo trading, throughout, that recalls the simple, revolutionary moves of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Tunguska’s variation of emotion and pace recalls that great band, too.

Key, is the music’s evocation of the mystery of contemplation. A clanging as of a prayer bell against a drone – a background echo – creates a spaciousness, the high Himalayas, simple beauty, devotion, absolving, saddening.

With inspired placement, “Masha” follows in a delicately swaying waltz-time – around Monhart’s serpentine soprano, the guitar, bass and drums decorously step

And then to follow it with the disc’s skronkist cut! The horn honks and worries against sheets, shards, and unleashes flails of metallic guitar, and flaying, rapid-fire drumming, and rumbling bass.

A great attribute of the electric guitar is that it can create sound that is blessed because simultaneously foundry-metallic, eardrum-peeling, unhingedly jangling, and of a wondrous, unlikely grandeur. Those elements are in good, cohering company here, with the drums’ crashing and the rataplan and often-squalling horns as from the Central Asian plains.

Over an extraordinary career spanning 21 years of impressive credits as a sideman and including two Grammy nominations as a leader, Mike Stern has established a secure place amongst the great guitarists of his generation. Gifted with uncanny facility and unparalleled capacity to burn, Stern comfortably and convincingly straddles the worlds of rock and jazz. While his seamless phrasing and his love of bebop repertoire place him firmly in the jazz camp, Mike's urgent attack and his occasional use of such devices as distortion, sustain and delay also indelibly tie him to a more crunching, rock aesthetic. Mike Stern is indeed a major player on the contemporary jazz scene. And given the relative ease with which he switches idioms, his signature bop-n-roll style makes him uniquely qualified to extend the guitar tradition into the millennium. Mike has recorded 10 CD's on Atlantic Records, his latest is Grammy nominated "Voices."

"Mike Stern has the respect of musicians and Jazz aficionados around the world. He's versatile and individual, having worked with Jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny and Micheal Brecker - to name just a few. During the 1980s he developed an exciting brand of modern Bebop, often featuring catchy, syncopated grooves and high-energy overdriven solos. His debut album for Atlantic, Upside Downside, boasted some burning lead work and riffs, while his latest recording Is What It Is adds more sophistication to that edge." - Guitar Techniques magazine August 1994.

“Friday Groove Night” with:
Marcus Eaton & the Lobby
Dim at Asia
9pm, doors at 8pm.
Tickets: $7 at the door

Marcus Eaton and The Lobby is best described as eclectic acoustic/electric groove rock with funk, reggae, world beat, jazz, and hip-hop overtones. In reality they defy all of these categories.  The band has recently joined forces with Uninhibited Records, a fresh new division of MCA/Universal. Please visit the official band site for the latest on all things ME&L!

The Dim at Asia venture was conceived as strictly a studio project in October 2000 in Seattle, WA. by two long-time friends and musical collaborators, Kevin Jenkins and Timothy Harper. As a year went by, Dim at Asia recorded in their home studio producing a catalogue of over seventy songs, which only fell on the eager and supportive ears of their friends. All the while, they were revising their sound into a well-crafted vision.

During fall of 2001, Jenkins and Harper had a poetic stroke of luck when some musical acquaintances from a couple years back moved to Seattle in hopes of creating an original band. Jenkins and Harper already had the original music, now they had the members to round out the group. Dim at Asia finally took the stage, and has been captivating live audiences since. The new members have effectively incorporated into the recording process as well, and a five song EP of some of their best compositions has been the result. A full length release will be completed winter 2002.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is the son of John and Alice Coltrane. John Coltrane passed away when Ravi was two. While he had a musical upbringing by his mother and began playing fairly early, he did not commence a jazz vocation until he was in his early twenties. Coltrane was able to hone his chops playing with Elvin Jones' group before meeting Steve Coleman and Graham Haynes. Coltrane became a member of the M-Base consortium of artists and singed to RCA in 1997 (which lists Coleman on its roster as well). Coleman produced and guested on Ravi's first recording, Moving Pictures (1998), as did trumpeter Ralph Alessi. The critical comparisons were inevitable, but Coltrane seemed to see this coming before he ever recorded a note. Coltrane's tone on tenor (he plays some soprano too) is more reminiscent of Joe Henderson's — though his father's sound is slightly evident — and in covering "Inner Urge" on his debut, he made it impossible to deny. Coltrane recorded a second album in 2000, From the Round Box, that was received even more warmly than his debut and featured contributions from Alessi again and pianist Geri Allen. He covered Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, and Wayne Shorter while adding a pair of his own tunes. His father's influence is a bit more evident here, but, nonetheless, Coltrane proved he was working his sound out for himself. Coltrane has also been featured on the compilation the New Young Lions of Jazz on the Arkadia label in duet with pianist Joanne Brackeen. - Thom Jurek

Idaho's Candid Jazz Collective's members have individually shared the stage with artists and groups ranging from Tim Reynolds, Natalie Cole, The Young Dubliners and The Moody Blues  to Randy Brecker, Slide Hampton, Bob Mintzer, Billy Cobham and Richie Cole.  They come together with Seattle guitarist extraordinaire RL Heyer to bring you hard bop fusion originals and newly approached standards - Idaho Stylee.

(Cliff Colon)  In a jazz community filled with great tenor saxophonists, Cliff Colon stands out by capturing a wide variety of emotions and personality into his playing. A Puget Sound native, Cliff began his musical studies at age 10, and since then has become an exciting element of the Pacific Northwest music scene. With his proficient technique and unique expression, this young saxophonist has become a definite leader, innovative soloist, a highly desired sideman and able instructor.

The horns of John Coltrane, Branford Marsalis, Michael Brecker and Pete Christlieb have been major influences in the development of Cliff's own personable sound. Cliff has a strong belief in educating younger students.  He has already begun to spawn a new generation of saxophonists in his community by visiting local schools, giving clinics and private lessons.

As he studied to earn his Bachelors Degree at Pacific Lutheran University, Cliff received the opportunity to share the stage with such jazz greats as Eric Reed, Russell Malone, Cyrus Chestnut and Ellis Marsalis. Since then, he performs regularly around the Puget Sound area with the Emerald City Jazz Orchestra, Pierce College Jazz Ensemble, Swing Session Big Band, Groovin' Higher Jazz Orchestra and many more. Colon is also the leader of The Cliff Colon Trio, which is quickly gaining a strong reputation and following for its high energy and progressive sound.

Still in his early twenties, saxophonist Cliff Colon has still only touched the tip of the iceberg in a highly competitive music scene, yet he is well on his way to a bright musical future

Porterhouse
Al Rowe Project

9pm, doors at 8pm.

Porterhouse is a solid fusion of jazz, r&b, funk and soul. This Portland, OR ensemble quickly established itself as one of the Northwest's premier instrumental bands, spinning a web of deep grooves, intricate horn charts and intense keyboard leads.

The band is led by the impressive keyboard stylings of Joey Porter (formerly of Rubberneck and Five Fingers of Funk). Joshua Cliburn on sax and Doug Lewis on guitar paint a musical portrait filled with infectious energy, while the heart-stopping intensity of Dan Scollard on bass and Brian Foxworth on drums anchor the bands multi-stylistic approach.

Barely three years old, Porterhouse has already gained many loyal fans performing in venues across Oregon, Washington, Utah, Montana, Colorado, California, and Idaho. Their hometown crowds have been overflowing historic venues like the Crystal ballroom, Alladin Theater, the Ohm, Mt. Tabor Theater and Jimmy Mak's jazz club.

Expressing Jazz in all its forms, the Marriott Jazz Quintet is a hard-swinging, high energy band, drawing audience acclaim and awards from the Pacific Northwest to it's current headquarters in New York. Featuring the talents of brothers, trombonist David and trumpeter Thomas, the band's repertoire ranges from bebop to ballads, sprinkled with the flavor of original compositions. In the tradition of the small bands led by Miles Davis, Woody Shaw, and Herbie Hancock, the group's attitude stems from their common appreciation for swing, tradition, and pure fun.

With it's origins in Seattle, the Marriott Jazz Quintet, took top honors by popular vote for Earshot Jazz's Best Acoustic Jazz Group in the Northwest for the year l999, following a previous award by Earshot for Best Emerging Acoustic Jazz Group in l996. A popular draw for festivals and clubs, The Marriott Jazz Quintet has performed at: the DuMaurier Jazz Festival in Vancouver B.C.; the Bud Shank affiliated Centrum Port Townsend Jazz Festival; Portland, Oregon's annual First Jazz Festival; Earshot Jazz Festival; Seattle's Bumbershoot Arts Extravaganza; the Seattle Art Museum's Art of Jazz series; jazz radio KPLU's Jazz Cruise series, and countless more events.

Matthew Jorgensen ranks high among the new breed of young musicians who will shepherd jazz into this next millennium. Drummer and percussionist, bandleader and composer, concert tour director and road manager, Matthew is the epitome of a modern jazzman, with a keenly personal musical voice, plus the wherewithal to help the music reach its potential audience.

Matthew Jorgensen's work, both as a leader and sideman, reflects a deep immersion in the jazz tradition. He is known for the freshness of his playing, his ability to say something new and appropriate to each musical occasion, favoring directness and passionate sincerity over mere bombast. His own groups, the intensely driving, rock-tinged unit, 451, and the hard-bop RadioAction (co-led with saxophonist Alex Graham), look simultaneously forward and back, with honest, daring jazz which updates the modern classics by finding its own path through demanding and new terrain.

“Friday Groove Night” with:
BeeCraft

Neon Brown
9pm, doors at 8pm.
Tickets: $8 at the door

(BeeCraft) - As the very sound of their name suggest, BeeCraft exudes a kind of bipolar intensity that's just plain irresistible- you can either dance yourself into a humid sweat or sit back to be dazzled and gradually jaw-fallen by their unaffected display of musical talent. In their music I hear a plucky blend of 50's jazz, late 60's psychedelia, and 70's funk that some how holds together, some how sounds right and natural and organic, as if sprung from the dreamy, wee-lit vision of a primitive Soul.... It should be then no surprise that at any given show BeeCraft offers to the initiated a source of strength and rejuvenation and to the newcomer a celebratory invitation: Come dance, come watch, come hear.

(Neon Brown)  Odd times and ambient groove. Cascading loops and vocal harmonies. Home-made instruments and funk for your butt.

Neon Brown is Seattle's contribution to the proud legacy of bands formed by brothers; including the likes of The Allman Brothers Band, The Brothers Johnson, The Bee Gees, The Doobie Brothers, Michael Jackson, The Righteous Brothers, Hall and Oates and -- of course -- Nelson. Though the Woods Brothers can never hope to be Nelson, they sure are brothers. Their most musical adventure began over seven years ago in the post-prog-neo-jazz-buttrock-fission band 'HeeND'. Over the next five years, they played extensively throughout the Northwest, collecting a small, but loyal audience for their giant catalog of adventurous written material and their often theatrical improv-based shows. HEEnd's last year and a half included a tour of much of the west coast, performances at NXNW '98 and SXSW '99 and a completely sold out five-piece performance at NXNW '99.

In the spring of 2000, the Woods brothers, sans extra band members and written material, recorded a Neon Brown demo using two Macintosh computers and a hi-fi stereo VCR. This recording of non-written material landed them their very first live gig: North by Northwest 2000. Since then, they have played in a variety of venues in a variety of towns to an ever-expanding audience. Neon Brown is the Woods brothers at their finest. A diverse collection of challenging originals (as well as regular improvisational collaboration with some fantastic northwest musicians) has continued to stretch and evolve their unique musical voices. Andrew's two-handed approach on his nine-string touch-guitar and Adrian's exploration into electro-mechanical sound effects and percussive melody provide loads of rich polymetric texture. Always known for their spontaneous musical wit, Andrew and Adrian are now moving into subtle new dimensions of groove-space, consistently surprising listeners with energy and complexity well beyond the imagined limits of the two-piece format.

"With his 16-piece big band, Scheps employs the full range of his interests, especially his composing skills. His large group's "omnivorous book" reflects the leader's varied tastes, from standards to 1970's funk, from classic Ellingtonian to originals by Scheps and other younger composers. Scheps leads this group of top Portland musicians wil gestures and occassional shouts. An though his approach varies with each style--including ferocious blowing, bluesy guts and intricate ensemble play--his sound is always dynamic; thick but agive, too, it's like a linebacker who's not out to hit you but to sing to you." --Lynn Darroch the Oregonian

Please join us for New Year’s Eve with wildman Mike Keneally.  We will be providing a champagne toast as part of the evening’s festivities.

Eccentric rock virtuoso Mike Keneally plays guitar and keyboards, sings and composes and produces and does a lot of other things, all of which are fascinating to listen to and nearly impossible to describe.

Largely self-taught, Mike played "stunt guitar" and keyboards in Frank Zappa's last touring band and has appeared on a bunch of Zappa albums, has recorded or performed with XTC, Robert Fripp, Sting, Kevin Gilbert, Steve Vai, The Loud Family, Henry Kaiser, Michael Manring, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Andy Prieboy, The Persuasions and scads of others, and has been producing solo works since the early '90s.

"Dancing," an ambitious work released in late 2000 by Keneally and his eight-piece band, Beer For Dolphins, debuted at Number 167 on The Billboard 200 chart, Number 11 on the magazine's Independent Albums chart and Number 11 on its Heatseekers list. Critics hailed it as one of the year's best albums.

Mike's 1999 solo album, "Nonkertompf," prompted these comments by David Fricke in Rolling Stone magazine: "I saw guitarist Mike Keneally play with Frank Zappa in the 1980s, nimbly negotiating the maestro's knotty charts, and I've watched Keneally cook hard with his twisted-fusion outfit, Beer For Dolphins. But none of it prepared me for the color and density of 'Nonkertompf,' a whirl of thirty-five instrumental miniatures, played by Keneally in their entirety and advertising not only his spicy fluency on the guitar but a flair for hot melodic sabotage rooted, yet not imprisoned, in Zappology. The music flies mad and fast, but what the hell? You have a whole century to digest it."

Keneally's other releases include 1992's "hat.", 1994's "Boil That Dust Speck," 1996's "Half Alive In Hollywood" and 1997's "Sluggo!". 1995 brought the left-field classic "The Mistakes," which found Keneally teamed with Henry Kaiser, Andy West and Prairie Prince to scintillating effect. A number of things involving Keneally have been nominated for Grammies, and some of them have won. His music invokes such rabid fan response that a group of Keneally enthusiasts from around the world joined together in San Diego during the summer of 2000 to present "Nonkerstock," their own fan-produced-and-promoted tribute to all things Keneally, culminating in a performance by Mike and BFD.

About Keneally and Beer For Dolphins, Matt Resnicoff wrote in Time Out New York: "This band, with such a peculiar genius leading it, is a thing to savor."

ToadJam's music is a mix of covers (Garcia, Hunter, Grisman, Dylan, Prine, Cash, Watson, Cotton) and the extended jam. A favorite gambit of the group, when They're playing at Fiddlers Inn, is to take note (pardon the pun) of whatever is playing on the house system during a break. Then they casually start picking up instruments and begin to pick up whatever the tune is, gradually taking over the house system. Then we rip the tune for the next 25 minutes or so. Double Cookin’ w/ Rod Cook & James “Curly” Cook   (blues)
Rod Cook (bandleader & songwriter, guitars & lead vocals) has been performing and recording in the Northwest for over 20 years, playing a variety of styles with numerous musical groups. He is well known for his expressive, soulful work over the years with Laura Love, and with former Steve Miller Band member James "Curley" Cooke. Rod has recorded five albums with Laura Love (including Octoroon and Shum Ticky, as well as the new Zoe Records release Fourteen Days), and one with "Curley" Cooke, Double Cookin'. Rod has also graced many recordings by Northwest artists, including Sugar Hill recording artist Ranch Romance. He has backed up blues legend Taj Mahal and recently opened as a solo act for Todd Rundgren. In 1999 and 2000 Rod received nominations from the Washington Blues Society for "Best" Acoustic, Slide and Electric Guitar categories, and in October 1998 he was featured in the national publication Acoustic Guitar magazine.

James "Curley" Cooke's 35-year career in the music business started in San Francisco where he was a founding member of the Steve Miller Band in 1966-67. During 1968 he performed with his own group, Curley Cooke's Hurdy Gurdy Band, and in 1969 he was a member of the Abeskhy Band, who were signed to MGM. From 1968-1971 Curley continued his association with Steve Miller, performing West Coast dates, recording on his albums, and working for his production company. In 1974 Curley completed a major tour with Miller and recorded tracks for the legendary albums Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams. During these years he also performed and/or recorded with such greats as Chuck Berry, Jerry Garcia, Ben Sidran, John Lee Hooker, James Cotton, Freddie King, Boz Scaggs, and many others.

From 1975 through 1982 Curley was a recording and traveling member of the Ben Sidran Band; had his own group in Seattle, The Cats 'n the Fiddle; and recorded a solo album on First American Records, Gingerman. At that point in his life he stopped performing and went to college, moved to Southeast Asia in 1985, and remained there teaching English and performing in Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand until his return to the U.S. in 1993. He quickly re-established his stateside performing career and was voted "Best Acoustic Guitar" by the members of the Washington Blues Society in 1995.

Curley is a seasoned music instructor whose experience includes developing and teaching courses in community colleges, designing a Blues Guitar instructional book, presenting guest lectures, and providing private instruction. He also is the founder of a highly successful non-profit organization called Pacific Northwest Blues in the Schools, which presents a full music instruction program to students in middle schools, high schools, and correctional facilities.

Pearl Django                        (gypsy jazz, swing)
"One listen to this terrific material should infuse anyone suffering from lack of rhythm, melody, or swing."
- Jim Hilmar, Vintage Guitar Magazine

The music pioneered by Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his partner in swing, violinist Stephane Grappelli, is still utter bliss in the esteemed hands of Pearl Django.  With a continuously fresh and hopelessly entrancing sound, bands like Pearl Django rejuvenate a love and talent for "Gypsy swing," a style that was once the height of sophistication.  With urbanity, romance, and a sense of urgency, the music of Pearl Django reaches out to the sophisticates of a new millennium as something joyful and timeless.

The music of Pearl Django is broadcast regularly on National Public Radio, and also on Canada's CBC radio show 'Disk Drive.'  Since the launch of their own record label in 1999, Modern Hot Records, the band has released four critically acclaimed albums: Avalon, Mystery Pacific and Souvenirs, Stephane Grappelli Remembered and Under Paris Skies. Under Paris Skies is their brand new album, which further showcases this group's immense talents.

Orville Johnson & Mark Graham   (folk/blues)
(The Kings of Mongrel Folk) Why would two of the most talented, zany and widely-respected roots musicians in the United States - both of whom have appeared on Garrison Keilor's Prairie Home Companion - choose to go on the road as a duo?  Simple: Mark Graham and Orville Johnson love the magic when they play together as much as their audiences do. "People comment on that all the time," says Orville. "They can tell we're having a good time up there. We play on a lot of different emotions." Wry humor, virtuoso harmonica, soulful blues, hot pickin' and sweet country vocals - that's what you get when Orville and Mark combine forces as the Kings of Mongrel Folk.

Graham's harmonica virtuosity on Irish and American fiddle tunes and his rich, woody sound on clarinet are well-known to fans of Kevin Burke's Open House. Graham's sardonic skewering of contemporary life, in such songs as "I Can See Your Aura and It's Ugly" and "Zen Gospel Singing" have been cult classics for years. His songs have been recorded by many, including the Austin Lounge Lizards, Bryan Bowers, and the Limelighters.
Orville Johnson, an instrumental gunslinger whom the Seattle Times describes as "player's player," has a gift of finding the "secret ingredient" that makes a song sound letter-perfect, whether it's an R & B tune from
New Orleans, a country blues or a jazzy ballad.  Orville's guitar, dobro, and quavering, honeyed vocals have seasoned more than a hundred recordings, soundtracks and countless TV and radio commercials.  He also produces records and teaches at events like the International Guitar Seminar and Pt. Townsend Country Blues Workshop. He has shared the stage with artists such as Doc Watson, Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker.

Between the two of them, they have played many of the most coveted gigs in North America and Europe: the Newport Folk Festival and Caffe Lena, out East; South by Southwest, in Texas; the Bay area's Freight and Salvage and Kuumbwa; London's Festival Hall and Glasgow's Celtic Connections Festival, in Europe, and on their home turf, Bumbershoot and the NW Folklife Festival. Though they were longtime acquaintances on the Northwest folk scene, it was at a Folklife Festival jam session in 1991 that they hatched their plan to expand their kingdom of mongrel folk nationwide and, yes, even worldwide.

"Orville Johnson has worked long and hard to earn his reputation as the leading player of plucked acoustic instruments in the Northwest. Guitar, dobro, mandolin-he's a master of them all. And he's not a bad singer, either." - The Rocket

"His song Blueprint for the Blues is one of the greatest 'classic' blues songs ever written." - Consumer Guide

"Orville Johnson's craftsmanship is a thing of simple beauty.  Four stars." - Blues Access

PRE-HOLIDAY SUPER BASH WITH THE:
Enders Brothers Band                               (blues)
Enders Brothers was formed in April '01and the concept then, as it still is now, was to play the blues traditionally, sincerely, and within our own style... and that is why we say so often.. "blues with a feeling". And definitely with an edge! If you've been to an Enders Brothers Blues show you know that it often becomes a happening of dance and emotion.

Tim Turner Band                                                (blues / rock)
Blending a diverse mix of rock and roll, Latin, and blues (including many original songs), The Tim Turner Band has been a consistent standout in the Greater Seattle area since 1995.  Singer, songwriter, guitar player extraordinaire, Tim Turner has been plying his craft in the Seattle area for three decades. From the highly successful '70s rock band CHILD to his current band, Tim has consistently performed on the leading edge of the local music scene. Give Tim a 'hollow-body' electric guitar and a stage, and the outcome is always the same: first-rate guitar playing, great singing, and outstanding original tunes ...

The Dan Page Trip                                    (blues)
What's a 16 year old guitar player to do when no one will join the band?  Dan Page enlisted his parents!  Dan started in on guitar at age 11 in his bedroom like most good suburban boys.   He formed a band with a couple school buddies called Venture that soon folded but did manage to crank out songs by Nirvana and Greenday.  During his sophomore year of High School he started taking private guitar lessons.  Dan was playing the blues now and his school buddies had no interest in joining a "blues" band, so Dan's dad, Andy, joined in on bass guitar as a drum machine filled out the rhythm section.  Unable to get a gig in that form they looked for a drummer but again no one answered the ads so Dan’s mom, Suzi, stepped in and gave it a try.  2 months later they were playing their first gig and haven't looked back since!

The Trouble Boys                                               (blues)
This band has deep roots in the Seattle music business. John Hanberry (guitar, vocal), and George Mizobe Johnson (drums, blues harp, vocal) met in 1973 and performed in local taverns as Shadowfax. They went on to form the more metal flavored Metropolis in 1975 with Joe Centenero (keyboards, vocal). A couple of years later George and Joe teamed up with Jimmy Free (bass, vocal, guitar) to form Back to Back, a full time road band. In 1978 the lineup changed. Jimmy left and John came on board. For the next three years Back to Back was a favorite in the West Coast club scene.

Fast forward to Fall of 1999.  After years of pursuing countless individual projects, the Boys wanted to play together again.  A couple of casual jams led to more serious rehearsal and Trouble Boys was ready to fly.  For six months they hosted the Wednesday night Blues Jam at Legends in West Seattle.  During that time they made their first appearance at Issaquah Salmon Days festival.  Appearances followed at other local clubs including The Swiss, The Raging River Saloon, Angie's, Larry's Green Front and Salmon Creek as well as private parties. Meanwhile the Boys have been busy writing tunes and producing their first CD.  They are making great progress and looking at a release date well before the Winter Solstice celebrations.

Kimball & The Fugitives                           (blues & more!)
Seattle native Kimball Conant leads the Fugitives into places no other blues band has gone before. Freddie King shuffles, slow grinders and Texas 2-beat blues are punctuated by sambas ("Acuarela do Brasil"), Tex-Mex polkas ("Adelita"), Bossa Novas ("On Green Dolphin Street"). Sometimes known as "Dr. Richard" Kimball and the Fugitive Combo the band keeps an audience's imagination running for 4 sets. Conant wields bottleneck for classics by Elmore James and Muddy Waters and his Gretch six-string can cover jazz/R&B by Grant Green and Ray Charles or country-western by Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. As if that were not enough, Conant dusts off his Espanol for tunes such as "Veracruz" by the one-time Mexican heartthrob, Agustin Lara.  The Western Hemisphere is not safe from Kimball and the Fugitives' musical enthusiasms.

Combustion Collective                     (improv. Jazz)
(Combustion Collective)  Formed in March of 2001, The Combustion Collective is a Seattle-based collective of musicians performing 100% improvised jazz with funky grooves. All music is spontaneously composed and performed simultaneously. This guarantees a unique experience with every live performance.  Listeners have compared The Combustion Collective to George Clinton, Mile Davis (Electric Era), Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, and Charlie Hunter. Carla Archuletta from The Global Muse say The Combustion Collective is "...a must listen for all progressive and improvisational jazz lovers."  The Combustion Collective's sound goes wherever the moment may take it. The Collective is like a trip with a soundtrack full of jazz (not the kind Mom and Dad swing danced to though), fusion, funk, and every other eclectic music imaginable. To quote Willy Wonka, "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams."

The Combustion Collective is Dave Kurtiak (bass), Stephen Morrisey (trumpet), Donovan Pfeifer (drums), Linus McTweed (guitar) and Abigail Fien (percussion).

“The Skylounge” Presents:

Siamese + special guest Christina HoneyCutt on vocals + visuals + projections by JUS-10
(Siamese)  Unlike any other, this is live drum n bass. This band further exemplifies the humans' ability to reverse engineer their most favored dance music and create a newform sound. Notice the dark and menacing jungle beats, as well as the mystical drum n bass - very advanced. Sawka's bionic mannerisms are of key note [implants?] as these are not samples but complex drum patters performed by the drummer on a drum set. As well, Lightfoot and Z's gifted rhythm provisions - frenetic super tempo rhythms and subsonic, modulating bass lines [not unlike that of fellow pioneers Photex, Clifford Gilberto, or Squarepusher] fuel the psychotic throb of the band's beautifully linear sound. The live show further deconstructs a DJs drum n bass set by phasing in and out of different source material, fashioning a continuous seamless mix of new and recorded material and expanses of electronic improvisation.” – Brian DeWaide

Jeremy Lightfoot | electric basses, samples

MJ Bishop Band                              (country & blues)
"Mary Jo Bishop plays both kinds of music: Country and Northwestern!" - Ben
MJ Bishop
took advantage of a rare August ice thaw to make her break from
Michigan's Upper Peninsula and come to Seattle several years ago.  In 1998, after entertaining local fans with classic rock, jazz/blues and country tunes, she picked up a guitar and started putting poetry to music.  The eventual result was The MJ Bishop Band, featuring original material with a folk/country character.  Many of the tunes on her full-length debut CD, Hometown Address, explore childhood in a small town, a Catholic upbringing, love and broken hearts.  By turns lighthearted, poignant, silly, and nostalgic, they focus on the surroundings of her youth and her ability to appreciate them now.  The toe-tapping "Cowboy" gets fans on their feet, the quiet reflection of "Hometown Address" touches a sympathetic chord for everyone, and you'll be eager to visit the Upper Peninsula after you've heard about the "Straits of Mackinac."  MJ plays about town with Ed Hodge on bass, Bob Knetzger on pedal steel guitar, dobro and banjo, and Engel Brand singing backup vocals, and you might catch a guest performer or three from time to time as well.

James "Curley" Cooke                             (blues guitar)
